artists: how to approach a gallery

We’re often approached by artists who’d like to have an exhibition with us or help with selling their work so I thought a post about this would be helpful.

It’s hard being an artist, we understand that. A lot of hard work and emotional energy goes into making art and selling it is often the hardest part. There is a lot of advice around for artists, especially on how to approach a gallery so I don’t want to repeat whats out there too much. I will however post a few tips based on our own experience of being approached by artists and what works and what doesn’t.

Obviously whether we like the work is the key thing, but in addition we will ideally look for the following in an artist:

  • Solid education in fine art, ideally MA educated
  • Most of the artists we collaborate with have works in both private collections and public institutions worldwide
  • A history of group shows and residencies
  • High standard of artistic production and good quality presentation
  • Professional website and social media
  • Professional conduct – an artist who has visited the gallery and clearly understands who we are and how their work would fit in to what we’re doing

We’re always happy to hear from artists and will offer constructive feedback as much as we can.

Also remember that setting up and running a gallery is a time intensive and costly experience. We are a business with day to day costs. We work hard to research and find artists whose work resonates with us and we also work hard to build a client list of people who might like to buy that work. It’s about working together with artists and supporting the combined efforts of making and promoting art.
