Hands up who loves camping? Not me I have to say… haven’t done ‘proper’ camping in over 20 years as I hate the thought of communal showers, uncomfortable mattresses and midnight treks to the toilet in the rain. Too many bad memories from the Brownies and school trips!
Glamping on the other hand has always sounded far more appealing and our recent three night stay at Featherdown Farm in Suffolk surpassed all expectations. We stayed in a ‘Frills Tent’ ie. with all the added frills – private wc and shower, log stove, verandah… BUT no electricity!
Featherdown is a franchise business – there are a number of family run farms around the UK who offer their glamping experiences. All offer kids activities – the one we stayed at had a hay barn maze to play in, a trampoline, friendly chickens and lambs and even a horse grooming experience.
Add in the Honesty Shop, communal pizza oven (which fires up on a Saturday evening) and you’ve got all the ingredients to make some brilliant memories with friends! Our group consisted of three other families – a group of 16 in total which meant we had four of the seven tents on the site.
We collected fresh eggs in the mornings and cooked up a feast on our little log fire stove.
Luckily the weather was kind to us which meant we were able to eat outside and explore the local area – along with visits to old favourites Southwold and Walberswick.
The tents themselves were really comfortable – every evening we’d button down the windows to stop the light waking us up too early. Bed linen, towels, cooking utensils, loo roll, kitchen towels and hand soap were all provided.
As darkness fell, we’d light all the lanterns and candelabras which was so atmospheric. Even when the temperatures dropped at night, the tent stayed cosy and warm.
There is a supermarket less than ten minutes drive away for any last minute essentials but the honesty shop is pretty well stocked (although we did pop to Tesco to buy everything we needed for a bbq one night!).
Our tent cost approx £700 for 3 nights and slept 6. We loved it so much we’re already planning next year’s trip!
