Matt and I love Paris and visit each November for ParisPhoto. Every year we stay in a different place, hoping to finally find the holy grail of spacious hotel rooms in the city… we always end up in stylish little bijou places, but alas, they are all united in their constricted urban footprints, offering up dolls house sized rooms and even tinier claustrophobic bathrooms.
So this year we were excited and intrigued to discover The Hoxton’s new Paris Hotel, with it’s range of rooms that are graded by size including ‘Shoebox’, ‘Cosy’, ‘Roomy’ and ‘Biggie’. We decided to treat ourselves to Roomy and roomy it was! We could actually pass each other around the side of the bed and there was a REAL sofa in the room (not just painted on tromph l’oiel as we have experienced in the past…). The 172 rooms have a cool modern mid century vibe with bare wooden floorboards, industrial lights and brass shower heads.
The building, with a history in the garment industry, lay derelict for ten years before an extensive and sensitive four year refurbishment which saw original elements of the XVIII courtyard restored to their former glory, including two interior courtyards. It’s essentially a very hip hotel in an historic Parisian courtyard building; one that a modern day Marie Antoinette would be likely to frequent…. (In fact I am sure I saw her, clad head to toe in Balenciaga…).
A monument historique, the hotel has plenty of charming quirks – breakfast is served in paper bags on a hook outside your door at a time of the choosing, making breakfast in bed an affordable (or in this case completely free) option. We went down to Rivie restaurant (named after Etienee Rivie, a counsellor to King Louis XIV, for whom the building was initially built) for brunch on our first morning to sample the especially delicious avocado and poached eggs on toast, alongside extremely good coffee from the Original Coffee Roasters. Lunch was also excellent – we went for the croque monsieur and a tomato pasta – both delicious. I am sure Etienne would have approved.
We also loved Jacques bar, accessed by another of the 300 year old staircases. The decor was both exotic and luxurious, inspired by the Majorelle gardens in Morocco and topped off with an incredible cocktail menu.
Location wise the hotel is pretty well placed. It’s just a mile from Gare du Nord and 20 mins on the metro to St Germain and roughly the same to Le Grand Palais. The Louvre, Bastille and canal region are all walking distance, as is Le Marais.
The art collection is fabulous too – a great mix of genres and colour.
We visited early November and our room was approximately £220 per night.
