The Loewe Lily

Named after the Greek word for beautiful – Calla – the Calla Lily represents holiness, faith and purity, and is often associated with the Virgin Mary or Angel of Annunciation. As a spring bloom its come to be seen as a sign of rebirth and youth.

Jonathan Anderson’s recent collection for Loewe features a range of suede, leather and brass twisted Calla lilies which are designed to be worn as necklaces, cuffs, anklets or hair pieces, or there’s a charm version which comes with a brass clip. The brand has a heritage connection to the Calla Lily which was used in Loewe’s window displays in the 1970s. Plus the floral arrangements of maverick florist Constance Spry, who changed the face of floristry in the 1930s,  are the inspiration behind Loewe’s S/S17 campaign, shot by Steven Meisel and featuring a series of 12 painterly floral still lifes (Spry’s lover Hannah Gluckstein loved to paint Calla Lilies).

“I’m a huge fan of Constance Spry’s work and her relationship with the British painter Gluck, I think she made flowers into a sculptural form” Jonathon Anderson, AnOther Magazine

A bold yet elegant motif, the lillies can be attached to a belt or bag, making them a versatile investment at £250. The only question is which colour to choose…

Loewe is a master of leather craftsmanship. At their recent pop up in London’s Dover Street Arts Club, they showcased an array of bags, clothing, shoes and jewellery., using organic materials like raw irish linen and super thin suede. I’m always so impressed with the quality of their items – they are a true atelier of high quality design and sophisticated production. I have a small shoulder bag from a few years ago, which gets better with age; I love how the character of the materials changes as it moulds to my lifestyle. Next on the list is a pink elephant bag – as my friend, the super stylist Anna Berkeley pointed out, if you’re going to get an elephant, it should really be a pink one… (ps for fans of Loewe, they’re opening a flagship in London later this year…)

I love Loewe, to me it is one of the best luxury brands there is nowadays. I really like what Jonathan Anderson is doing with the brand, making it a bit more modern but still keeping the quality / craftsmanship.
